A Few Words from our President – July 2018

Bonjour fellow Skålleagues!

Bienvenue to our July newsletter, published just in time for our festively French “Bastille Day” themed function today on the 12th of July!  A huge “merci beaucoup” to Atout France (French Tourism) for their generous support of our function  today, providing a $200 Crown Gift  Voucher for use at Bistro Guillaume at Crown as the prize for our  best dressed “French style” (themed or in red, white and blue) as well as copies of their French Tourism Guides for each of you t0 take home with you today.

Looking to the wider Skål world, the 47th Skål Asia Aria Congress took place from the 21st to the 24th of June in Macau with great success, particularly with regard to the media coverage  in both the press and on television.  It’s fabulous to see our organisation garnering attention and living our vision to “be a trusted voice in travel and tourism”.

A reminder to all of our members that next month (24th – 26th August) we have the Skål  Australia 98th Annual Congress happening in Melbourne.  All members are invited to attend and I encourage you to consider doing so if you need to be in this part of the world for either work or leisure around this time in August.  The members you’ll meet from around Australia will fast become friends and there are many opportunities to do business among friends at the congress events.  I will be attending on behalf of the club and it would be great to see more of our members come along also.

On the subject of visiting other clubs, I made the trip up to Broome a couple of weeks ago to attend Skål International Broome’s 23rd Anniversary function which was a gala dinner held at the infamous Sun Pictures Open-roofed Cinema.  I was made to feel extremely welcome and President Ashley Munn and his committee and members made sure it was a fun and memorable evening for all.

Back to our own club and what’s been happening at Skål International Perth since our last newsletter.  We had our second Young Skål Professionals Perth function on the evening of Tuesday 5th June at the (very sadly) now closed, Terrace Hotel in the MacAlpine Room.  Skål International Perth Committee Member, Nicola Strudwick represented the Club at this evening Sundowner event and took great pleasure in inducting several new members into this growing Club.  Debra Matthews from Thai Airways served as the Guest Speaker, sharing her knowledge of the industry, her own career story and the various roles available for those that may be interested in working with an airline. Her message was authentic and honest, encouraging young professionals to consider themselves their own brand, making sure they’re memorable for the right reasons and building and nurturing relationships – the key to both opportunity and longevity in a successful travel & tourism career. Young Skål Professionals Perth are certainly a group on the move and we encourage interested young professionals in our industry to enquire about joining!  We are currently at 17 members and growing and the next function will be held on Tuesday 7th August (further details to follow).

I’d like to encourage all our Members to engage with Skål International Perth, Skål Australia and Skål International on Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram.  A reminder that our Club is rostered to post some local area content on the Skål Australia Facebook page every Tuesday morning at 10am and Members are invited to submit an image and a short amount of text focusing on tourism areas, attractions and activities in the greater Perth region.  So far Ryan Mossny from Two Feet & a Heartbeat has taken advantage of this opportunity and his tours were promoted to all our members and followers Australia-wide with International Skalleagues also showing interest.

Our August function will be a Sundowner catering to those members who particularly find it difficult to attend luncheons on work days.  The venue is the W, XYZ Bar on teh ground floor of the Aloft Hotel in Rivervale and the invitations will commence being sent on the 23rd of July.  These events have been popular so far this year and we look forward to another successful evening function with your support.

Until then, Au Reviour, keep warm and look forward to seeing you all at the Aloft next month.

Yours in Skål,

Ali Banks
