A Few Words from Our President – September 2018

September 2018

Dear Skalleagues,

Welcome to Spring!

Skål Australia’s 98th National Congress

I’ve recently returned from our Skal Australia 98th National Assembly in Melbourne and wanted to let you all know what an enjoyable and productive weekend it was. Hosted by Skal International Melbourne, this event was held at RACV City Club in Bourke St and featured a welcome cocktail function on Friday night, our National Assembly meeting on Saturday with a start to the formalities and a full days’ agenda featuring reports from members of the National Committee along with Club reports from all 24 Australian Clubs (including ours).  It was exciting to find out about what other clubs are doing to build their profile within their local industries and communities and to add value to their members and I’ve brought some great ideas home with me to discuss with out committee and see if they can be implemented in our club.

Young Skal Perth

We are very proud of the positive growth we have seen with our Young Skal Professionals with 16 new members. We have appointed four Young Skal co-ordinates to build on their event calendar that will be bi-monthly with events that will suit their member base. They are very keen to build on this membership and already have upcoming meetings to source new members and will be looking for the support of Our Skal Peru members from time to time to draw on your extensive industry knowledge. I know you will welcome this opportunity to support the future leaders of our state travel and tourism businesses. Whilst in Albany the audience were extremely pleased to hear of Young Skal Perth including the Tafe students keen to get involved and the tourism operators in Albany quite willing to offer their services in support of a Young Skal famil.

Skal Perth on the Road

In support of Skal Albany along with the attendance of Alfred Messe (spellcheck that) Our Club Mentor and xxx role in Skal International, myself and committee member Nicola Strudwick took to the road to attend the Amazing South Coast Tourism Forum in Albany. This also serviced as a significant opportunity to drive membership for Albany given the range of tourism representatives in attendance from the wider regions in the area. Alfred was able to share the benefits of Skal as an active tourism operator himself with his own retreat in Tasmania. The positive impact it has had to his wider membership in doing business with friends has provided numerous accolades they have received from working as collective group with a growth mindset. With the post event networking opportunity and the conversations we all had, we are very hopeful that Susan xxx Albany Club president will be welcoming new members very soon.

Upcoming Events

We encourage our members to attend our upcoming events including our Past Presidents lunch in October at Bistro Guillaume where we honour our past presidents.

November function will be a Sundowner held on the second Friday of the month as we head across to the new Camfield next to Optus Stadium. Like last November this leads into the WA Tourism Awards being held at Crown and always Skal Perth to welcome a wide range of tourism guests that continue to be gracious supplier sponsors of Our Club. Your attendance and support will be greatly appreciate and a wonderful networking opportunity.

Lastly with only three months until our CHRISTMAS event this is the one that is always a stand out and an opportunity for you to extend an invitation to a colleague or staff member to bring in the festive spirit. We will be at the newly renovated The Melbourne Hotel that promises to be a beautiful event with the delights of Executive Chef Oli on hand to deliver a scrumptious Christmas feast.

Skål World Congress – Mombasa, Kenya 17 – 21 October

I’ll be departing for Africa in a few weeks to represent Skål International Perth as the World Congress in Mombasa and on the way, will visit Cape Town where I’ll be going through final preparations with our Skålleagues there to complete the Twinning of our two clubs which will occur in Mombasa.  If you’ve ever considered experiencing Africa and have some leave owing, I highly encourage you to register to attend this World Congress and have part of your trip be tax deductable!  A number of operators in Kenya have safari packages on offer pre and post Congress and it’s still not too late to book and join in for this fabulous event!

Yours in Skål,

Ali Banks
