A Few Words from Our President – August 2017

August 2017

Dear Skalleagues,

I’m currently on the return trip from our Skal Australia 96th National Assembly in Manly this weekend and wanted to let you all know what an enjoyable and productive weekend it was. Hosted by the Skal Club at Sydney North, this event was held at the historic QStation and featured a welcome cocktail function on Friday night (complete with an interesting presentation on the history of the site), followed by a Ghost Tour!  Saturday saw a start to the formalities with a full days’ agenda featuring reports from members of the National Committee along with Club reports from all 24 Australian Clubs (including ours) and an introduction to the President and Secretary of the soon to be relaunched Alice Springs Club.

We were also introduced the President of the Skal Club of Salzburg and of Skal Austria, Franz Heffeter who was visiting with his wife Brigitta for the “Twinning” of his club with that of Sydney North.  Apparently, the groundwork for this arrangement was laid at last year’s World Congress in Monaco and it was great to see this new interclub relationship come to fruition.  Mohan Navarin and colleague Ravish from Skal Hyderabad were also there presenting on the upcoming World Congress they’re hosting and it’s clear that they’ve planned incredibly well for an exceptional event.  It’s still not too late to register if you’d like to attend – many clubs have members making the trip and seeing a bit of India while they’re there!  A reminder of the dates:  2017 World Congress is in Hyderabad (5th October 2017 – 9th October 2017), http://www.skalcongress.org/registration

The Gala Dinner on Saturday night was a fabulous event featuring live entertainment and a great night was had by all.  Sunday saw the formalities over with some Skalleagues opting for a whale-watching cruise of Sydney Harbour and then a BBQ lunch by the water before saying our goodbyes.  As for the last National Assembly in Port Douglas, it was really wonderful to learn some great ideas working in other clubs that your committee will discuss trying out here in Perth and also to reconnect with members from clubs all around Australia.  I encourage you to make the most of all of the opportunities to network that are provided both at our own club level, by attending functions at other clubs if you happen to be travelling for work or leisure both within Australia or overseas and by trying to get to a National Assembly if you’re going to be interstate.

On that note, the Skal Australia AGM next March will be hosted by the Skal Club of Canberra on the 16th and 17th of March next year.  This event will coincide with the Canberra Balloon Festival, the Canberra Light Festival (Enlighten) and the Night Noodle Markets.  There’ll be the opportunity to attend the Canberra Club’s March function on the Thursday prior also and President, Patina Farnham and her Committee have plans well underway for a really fabulous event.  It’s definitely worth planning ahead for if you may have business on that side of the country around that time.  We also learned that the Skal Club of Melbourne will be hosting the following National Assembly on the 24th & 25th of August next year and planning has begun for this.

Our September function will take place at the W XYZ Bar at Perth’s new aloft Hotel located just off Great Eastern Highway in Rivervale and presents a great opportunity to view this beautiful new property.  We’ll meet at 12:30pm on Thursday the 14th of September and look forward to a delicious 2 course lunch and to inducting 2 new members and welcoming them to Skal Perth.

I hope to see as many of you there as possible.

Yours in Skål,

Ali Banks
